Following is a recap of conversation recently held with a business man, who we will call Joe to guard his real name. Joe was launching a new venture in three months. The conversation went:
Joe: I read where explainer videos are a must for businesses, so I need an explainer video!
SLM: How do you know an explainer video is what will work for you?
Joe: I’m not sure. I was just going by what one of the experts on Facebook was saying every business needs.
SLM: So, you don’t have a strategy in place outlining the purpose of the Explainer Video and what it is going to say?
Joe: No, I just need a video that explains my business’ mission.
SLM: Where are you going to place the video so it reaches your target audience?
Joe: Figure I would post it on Facebook since I hear they have a Billion people.
SLM: How do you know your target audience is on Facebook?
Joe: If they are not on Facebook where would they be?
SLM: What about placing it on your web-site?
Joe: OH, the website will not be ready for another 90 days. I figured the video would be something our potential clients could watch until we get our site launched.
SLM: You don’t have a website?
Joe: Not yet
SLM: It appears you do not have a clear strategy on what to do with the video once it is produced.
Joe: No, I guess not.
Stop the Madness
This type of conversation seems to be one we have with a majority of the business people who come to us seeking our video production services. In well over 95% of the initial contacts the potential client has no clear strategy on what to do with a video once it is produced. Even if they have a strategy we find many have flaws since their strategy is based on unrealistic goals or follows what some other business is doing.
